2023-2024 Annual Report

September 1, 2023 – August 31, 2024

Message from the Minister of Education

On behalf of Alberta’s government, I am pleased to extend my utmost gratitude to the Alberta School Boards Association and all of its members for another year of remarkable service and dedication.

The work we have been elected and entrusted to do is some of the most important work taking place in Alberta today. Together, we have the responsibility to ensure that every student receives a world-class education. The decisions we make, the work we do, has the power to shape Alberta’s future by guiding the next generation as they move from the equations and essays in the classroom to life after school.

As Alberta’s Minister of Education, it is an honour and a privilege to work alongside you. I am very grateful for the incredible work being done in classrooms and behind the scenes, all of which will help our children step into adulthood with the confidence and skills and abilities they need for lifelong success.

It’s no secret, Alberta is growing, and it is growing fast. We know that this population growth is causing historic enrollment pressures in our education system. This is why we are moving forward with a generational investment of $8.6 billion to build schools now. Through this investment we will build up to 90 new schools, modernize or replace up to another 24 of them and rollout more modular classrooms to create 200,000 new and modernized student spaces within the next seven years.

These new and modernized spaces will ensure that your members can continue to help every child that walks through their doors have endless opportunities for them to make life-long friends and discover and pursue their passions. As we build these spaces, we will rely on your expertise and advocacy to ensure that every project is as impactful as possible.

Thank you for being strong advocates for Alberta’s children and champions for education. I look forward to continuing to work together so we can build a brighter future for our students and for Alberta.

Like you, Alberta’s government believes in empowering exceptional governance at the school board level, which is why ninety-eight per cent of education funding flows directly through local boards. We recognize your members know best what their students, schools, and communities need.
